The mayor of the temporarily occupied Dniprorudne, Yevhen Matveev, died in captivity as a result of torture by Russian soldiers. This was reported by the Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“Another case of aggressor’s crimes: Yevhen Matveev, the mayor of Dniprorudne, died in Russian captivity. Today it became known that the Office of the Prosecutor General confirmed the information that the Ukrainian died as a result of torture, having suffered numerous injuries and damages. This was reported earlier by the Ukrainian media,” Lubinets said.
The Ombudsman sent an appeal to the UN and the ICRC over another human rights violation by the Russian occupiers.
“This is not just a human rights violation – it is a war crime and a crime against humanity committed deliberately and cynically. After all, lung injuries and numerous fractures do not occur by themselves! Such treatment of civilians, torture of civilians is a disregard for all norms of international humanitarian law and the very essence of humanity,” emphasizes Lubinets.
The Ombudsperson once again appeals to the international community:
“Russia violates the Geneva Convention and illegally detains Ukrainian civilians. Their rights are violated, civilians are kept in terrible conditions and tortured. We already have more than one confirmed case of death of illegally detained civilians in Russian captivity.”
The world needs a clear response to this total disregard for IHL.
