Vandals desecrate statue of Pope John Paul II in Rome

In Rome, unknown persons have vandalized a statue of Pope John Paul II, installed near the Termini central station, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing local media.

An image of a hammer and sickle appeared on the sculpture of the pontiff, and offensive inscriptions were made, including the word “fascist.”

The act of vandalism was noticed after a rally in support of Palestine.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the act of vandalism, calling the actions of the offenders “an unworthy act.”

“They claim to be taking to the streets for peace, but then they insult the memory of a man who was a true defender and builder of peace,” the government’s press service quoted her as saying.
