U.S. Army Chief of Staff Randy George has been relieved of his duties: the reasons
3 April 15:26
U.S. Army Chief of Staff Randy George was forced to resign under pressure from U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset amid the ongoing war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran, AFP reported on Friday, April 3, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The day before, Reuters and CBS News had reported the same information, citing anonymous sources in the U.S. Department of Defense. Later that day, Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell announced George’s resignation on the X microblog.
“General Randy George is stepping down as the 41st Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army effective immediately. The Department of Defense is grateful to General George for his decades of service to our nation. We wish him all the best in retirement,” the post reads.
The reasons for U.S. General Randy George’s resignation are unclear
It is noted that the reasons for the resignation were not initially clear. One of CBS News’ sources suggested that Pete Hagset “would like to see someone in the role of Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army who embodies U.S. President Donald Trump’s vision for the military.”
At the same time, a senior U.S. Department of Defense official told CBS that the Pentagon is grateful to Randy George for his service, “but it is time for a change in leadership in the Army.” George was appointed Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during the presidency of Donald Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden.
According to CBS, General David Hodne, who headed the Army Transformation and Training Command, and Major General William Green, who led the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps, also lost their posts at the same time as George. The Washington Post had previously reported on the resignations of Hodne and Green.
Resignations of high-ranking military officials under Trump
As AFP notes, a number of high-ranking military officials lost their posts during Donald Trump’s second presidential term. For instance, in February 2025, Charles Brown, then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was dismissed without explanation.
Navy Chief Lisa Franchetti, Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan, and Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff James Slyfe also left their posts. Additionally, Pete Hagset pushed for the early resignation of Air Force Chief of Staff David Olvin.
