Engels is a strategically important city in Russia. With a population of 225,000 people, it is home to 22 large industrial facilities. However, more importantly, it is home to one of the largest air bases in the world. It is one of the two operating bases of the Russian strategic aviation force, which deploys Tu-160 and Tu-95 bombers armed with nuclear-capable cruise missiles.
