Trump’s team responded to whether the US would leave NATO

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the United States will remain in the NATO alliance.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing his interview with NBC News.

During the conversation, Bessent did not directly answer which was more important for US national security – Greenland or NATO. He called it a “false choice.”

Later in the interview, the US Treasury Secretary confirmed that “of course, we (the United States – ed.) will remain part of NATO.”

As is well known, Greenland is part of Denmark, a NATO ally. But as NBC writes, a number of Democrats warn that any US action against Greenland would destroy the NATO alliance.

Bessent was also asked how the annexation of Greenland by the United States would differ from Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, to which the Treasury Secretary replied:

“I believe that Europeans will understand that this is best for Greenland, best for Europe, and best for the United States,” he said.

US withdrawal from NATO and possible control over Greenland

In December 2025, Republican Thomas Massie, a member of the US House of Representatives, introduced a bill for the United States to withdraw from NATO.

“NATO is a relic of the Cold War. The United States should withdraw from NATO and use that money to defend our country, not socialist countries. Today, I introduced HR 6508 to end our membership in NATO,” the congressman explained.

His bill states that NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed more than 30 years ago.

According to Politico, NATO has no plans in place in case the US decides to withdraw from the North Atlantic Alliance.
