European Commission proposes to extend sanctions against Russia bypassing Hungary

The European Commission has proposed to extend sanctions against Russia by a simple majority decision, bypassing Hungary. Bloomberg reports this with reference to an EU document sent to the foreign ministers of the member states before the meeting in Copenhagen, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The publication says that the EC proposed to extend the sanctions by a qualified majority of countries, rather than unanimously, to “reduce the risk that Hungary will block the process and seek the return of assets to Russia.”

on September 23, US President Donald Trump said during his speech at the UN General Assembly that he would discuss with the leaders of the European Union member states the reduction of Russian energy imports. According to the American leader, the EU countries are trying to “fight Russia” but continue to buy its energy resources. The head of the White House called this decision a disgrace.

In turn, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, following talks with the US President, said that the EU would “permanently” stop importing Russian energy by 2027.
