European Union leaders discussed Russian gas transit through Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels, among other topics. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Bloomberg.
Asked whether there was a chance to extend the agreement on gas transit through Ukraine beyond this year, Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides told reporters that “this is one of the issues we will discuss with President Zelensky.” Negotiations to preserve transit have been ongoing for several months, and now buyers are increasing pressure and discussions are intensifying.
Meanwhile, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob said that an extension of the contract is unlikely, as Ukraine has said it does not want Russian gas to continue flowing through its territory after the current agreement expires, and possible alternatives being discussed include fuel swaps and other intermediaries.
“Realistically, no,” said the head of the Slovenian government.
According to Jürgen Schneider, head of the energy department at the Austrian Ministry of Energy, the Austrian government is aware of the efforts of Slovakia, one of the countries that still depends on Russian gas, to continue transit through Ukraine, but is not aware of any agreement ready to be signed.
