President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a briefing that he hopes for tougher US sanctions against Russia, not weaker ones, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“We believe that the United States will not lift sanctions, but, on the contrary, will take steps towards their tightening. Daily strikes, and today’s ballistic missile strike (on Kryvyi Rih) is proof that we need stronger sanctions against Putin. This will make them stop, or at least stop the hot phase of this war,” he said.
In this regard, Zelensky mentioned bills to strengthen sanctions introduced by both Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress.
Zelenskyy hopes that “appropriate strong steps” By the United States will follow soon.
“And I know – at least we have this information – that America is close to taking appropriate measures. Let’s see if it will happen. This is not a prophecy, it’s just information that is available. We will see how much it corresponds to reality in the near future,” he says.
The bills envisage prohibitive, 500% duties on imports from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other raw materials, a ban on investments in Russia and tougher measures against Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
These sanctions are expected to be imposed if the United States is convinced that Moscow is deliberately sabotaging peace talks.
