Why Saratov refinery?
The Saratov Oil Refinery is one of the key enterprises in the Russian oil refining industry. The refinery specializes in the production of gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, various grades of bitumen, vacuum gas oil and industrial sulfur. In total, the company produces more than 20 types of petroleum products with a processing volume of 4.8 million tons per year as of 2023.
It is particularly important that this enterprise is directly involved in meeting the needs of the Russian armed forces with fuel and other petroleum products.
The General Staff emphasized that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are consistently taking measures aimed at undermining the military and economic potential of the Russian Federation. In particular, it is about undermining Moscow’s ability to supply the occupation forces with fuel, ammunition and weapons in order to force the aggressor to stop its armed aggression against Ukraine.
“Allies” disapprove
Over the past month, Ukrainian drones have carried out a series of targeted attacks on key Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure facilities. For example, in late August, Ukrainian Armed Forces drones attacked refineries in Krasnodar and Syzran, recently unmanned systems confirmed the damage to one of Russia’s largest refineries, and yesterday the largest oil export terminal Primorsk and the Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery, one of Russia’s two largest oil refineries, were attacked. Experts estimate that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have shut down 17% of refining capacity, and this figure is only growing.
As a result of these attacks, a number of refineries shut down operations, and oil transportation via the Druzhba pipeline was temporarily suspended. Against the backdrop of these events, several regions of Russia have already begun to restrict the sale of gasoline – fuel is sold with coupons for businesses, and prices for AI-95 are rising rapidly
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Western partners do not support Ukraine’s campaign of strikes on Russian refineries, Bloomberg reported recently. After all, Europe is known to avoid serious measures that could cause disruptions in oil supplies. Ukrainian attacks are already gradually leading to an increase in world fuel prices, which the “allies” do not like.
