Strikes on Nizhyn: Russia attacks railroad infrastructure, damages power facilities
8 October 19:01
On the night of October 8, Russian troops attacked Nizhyn in Chernihiv region. They targeted railroad infrastructure. The strikes caused fires and serious damage to the tracks, railroad bed, and warehouses. This was reported by the State Emergency Service, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
In the morning, the occupiers repeated the attack, hitting another infrastructure facility in the region. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.
What are the consequences?
- The railroad bed and tracks were damaged, which led to a change in routes and the cancellation of a number of flights.
- Rescuers are eliminating the consequences of the shelling, but the scale of the destruction is significant.
- Separately, another attack on a power facility in Chernihiv region was reported, leaving thousands of consumers without electricity.
Other strikes this night
The attacks affected not only the Chernihiv region:
- A drone hit a residential building in the Krasnopilska community in Sumy region, injuring three people, including a child.
- In eastern Ukraine, a missile damaged a Yofi hummus factory.
Why it matters
Russian forces continue to systematically target Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, including transportation and energy. Such attacks are aimed at hampering logistics, supplies and evacuations, as well as creating additional pressure on the civilian population ahead of winter.
It is worth reminding that the railway infrastructure is one of the key ones for Ukraine in wartime: it is used to transport military supplies, humanitarian aid and evacuations.
In the summer of 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 100 rail infrastructure facilities had been damaged by attacks.
Russia systematically attacks Ukraine’s energy facilities. In 2022-2023, this led to large-scale blackouts, and the authorities warn that the winter of 2025/26 could be even more difficult.
What’s next
Experts are already working to restore train traffic and power supply. At the same time, the military warns that attacks on infrastructure may intensify during the cold season, when the pressure on the power system is greatest
