Ukrainians will be able to obtain a residence permit in Hungary even with expired passports. The relevant decree has been published on the Hungarian government‘s website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The document, issued by the Hungarian government on 14 June, states that an identity card abroad is considered valid for the period of the state of emergency in Hungary .

Thus, when applying for a foreign passport of a citizen of Ukraine, an expired passport is considered valid and a residence permit can be issued, including for up to six months after the end of the state of emergency in Hungary.

At the same time, this provision does not apply to the procedure for acquiring Hungarian citizenship.

The decree came into force on the day following its promulgation.

It should be noted that after the temporary protection was extended for the whole of the European Union for another year (until 4 March 2025), the Hungarian government extended the validity of residence permits based on temporary protection until 4 March 2025.

The state of emergency in Hungary was first introduced on 11 March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. With minor changes, it lasted until June 2022. In May 2022, the Hungarian government initiated a state of emergency due to the war in Ukraine, and it has been regularly extended since then until now.
