Hungary and Slovakia oppose new package of EU sanctions against Russia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary and Slovakia would not support the 18th package of sanctions against Russia proposed by the European Commission. The reason for this decision is the disagreement of both countries with the EU’s plans to completely stop importing Russian energy.

Siyarto said this at a press conference, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“We will not support this package, as the European Union wants to ban member states, including Hungary and Slovakia, from purchasing cheap Russian natural gas and oil, as they have done before,” the minister said.

As a reminder, on June 17, the European Commission proposed a gradual halt to oil and gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. In particular, it is planned to ban the conclusion of new contracts for the import of Russian gas from January 1, 2026.

Today, the EU Council is considering a new, 18th package of sanctions, which includes, among other things, a reduction in the ceiling price for Russian crude oil from $60 to $45 per barrel, set by the G7 and the EU.
