Hungary is once again open to Ukrainian travelers: a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

13 April 10:21

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revoked its previous recommendations urging citizens to refrain from traveling to Hungary. This was announced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Thus, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has officially changed its previous stance on travel to the neighboring country, which had previously been linked to political and security risks.

Why the Foreign Ministry previously advised against traveling to Hungary

Previously, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recommended that citizens avoid visits to Hungary due to potential risks and the tense political situation during the election campaign.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi explained these recommendations as being driven by security concerns. At the time, the ministry believed that during the political process in Hungary, the topic of Ukraine could be exploited for manipulation.

For this very reason, the foreign ministry took heightened precautions and publicly urged Ukrainians not to plan trips to the country for the time being.

What specific restrictions were in place previously

In addition to the general recommendation not to visit Hungary, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also advised citizens against registering as observers for the parliamentary elections held on April 12.

The ministry also warned Ukrainians serving on international missions against participating in such trips. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Hungarian government was using the Ukrainian issue in its domestic political processes, so it deemed it prudent to minimize any risks.

What has changed now

The previous recommendations have now been officially revoked. This was announced by Minister Andriy Sybiga.

This means that the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs no longer urges citizens to refrain from traveling to Hungary, and previous warnings related to the election period and political tensions are no longer in effect.

According to the president, it is important that a constructive approach prevails, and that Europe and every European country grow stronger through cooperation, stability, and mutual respect.

What Zelenskyy said about future relations with Hungary

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is ready for meetings and joint constructive work for the benefit of both nations.
