Ukraine dramatically defeats Italy in a shootout at the World Cup

The Ukrainian national men’s ice hockey team won the second match of the World Championship in Division 1A, defeating the Italian team in a series of post-match shootouts. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
The game began with difficulties for the Ukrainian team after the referees recorded a violation – six field players on the ice during a lineup change. However, goalkeeper Dyachenko, for whom it was his debut match at the tournament, played confidently in the minority, and in one episode he was helped by the goal post.
By the middle of the first period, the Ukrainians managed to level the game and then take the lead. Aggressive pressure in the offensive zone brought results – Tracht and Fadeev took the puck away from the opponent, started a fight on the heel, where Denisin was the fastest to react to the rebound and opened the scoring.
At the beginning of the second period, there was a controversial episode. The Ukrainian national team earned a numerical advantage and seemed to realize it after a great play. The referees initially scored the goal after a video review, but a few seconds later they suddenly changed their mind. Not only did the Ukrainian team not get a second goal, but they also earned a two-minute penalty.
This moment had a negative impact on the mood of the Ukrainian team and gave confidence to the Italians, who soon equalized, taking advantage of the fact that the Ukrainians had retreated too deeply to their goal. However, the Ukrainian coach’s team showed character and took the lead again. Zakharov scored from a sharp angle, counting on a ricochet from the goalkeeper, which brought the result – 2: 1.
In the third period, the tension remained high. In the fifth minute of the final twenty minutes, the Italians equalized. Zanatta hit the back of the net with an accurate long-range shot when several players were blocking the Ukrainian goalkeeper’s view.
Regular time ended with a score of 2:2, and, like in the previous match, they had to play overtime and then a series of shootouts. This time, fortune was on the side of the Ukrainians – goalkeeper Dyachenko did not miss a single shot, and Peresunko made the decisive shot.
Tomorrow the teams will rest at the World Cup, and the next match of the Ukrainian national team will be held on April 30 against the hosts of the tournament – the Romanian national team. The match is scheduled to start at 19:30 Kyiv time.
