Ukraine will integrate its energy market with that of the European Union

7 April 18:28

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted Law No. 12087-d, “Law of Ukraine on the Implementation of European Union Law and the Integration of Energy Markets, Enhancing Security of Supply and Competitiveness in the Energy Sector.”

This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada’s press service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The law aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework for the full integration of the Ukrainian electricity market into the European Union’s internal energy market.

In particular, it establishes the legal framework for “day-ahead” market coupling and the intraday market with European trading zones.

Thus, electricity trading will take place in a coordinated manner in terms of prices and volumes both for the following day and on the same day.

The law also implements the European model of risk preparedness in the electricity sector and introduces capacity assurance mechanisms.

In addition, new ways to flexibly manage supply and demand will emerge, including aggregating small energy sources and controlling when and how much electricity consumers use.

The law ensures compliance with ENTSO-E requirements: the Ukrainian power grid will operate according to the standards and rules of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) to ensure safety and interoperability with EU countries.

A total of 47 amendments were incorporated into the law, out of 1,358 amendments submitted.
