Ukraine has resumed electricity exports to Europe

The resumption of electricity exports from Ukraine to Europe does not mean large-scale exports of electricity from the country. We are talking only about small volumes that appear at certain times due to a temporary surplus of generation.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a statement by Oleksandr Trokhymets, Vice President for Energy at the Ukrainian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Ukraine).
According to him, the first deliveries amounted to literally tens of megawatts — about 12 MW at certain times when there is an excess of production in the power system.
“This is not ‘exporting electricity from the country,’ as it is often presented. It is a tool for balancing the system,” Trohimets explained.
He noted that the decision to export is made by the dispatcher of NPC Ukrenergo and only when the system has a power reserve. If the balance deteriorates, exports are immediately stopped.
Reasons for the surplus
The reasons for the surplus are the seasonal increase in hydroelectric power plant output due to spring floods, as well as the increase in solar power plant generation. During the daytime, the power system sometimes produces more electricity than it can consume.
In such a situation, the expert explains, there are two options: to limit the operation of power plants or to sell the surplus to the external market. The second option allows energy companies to avoid production losses and obtain additional funds that the industry needs for repairs and recovery after attacks.
At the same time, for an energy system synchronized with Europe, it is normal to both export and import electricity at different times of the day, depending on the balance between production and consumption.
As a reminder, Ukraine resumed limited exports after a pause due to Russian attacks that lasted from November 2025.
