Ukrainian fencer Vlada Kharkova has become a world champion, winning the world championship in Tbilisi, Georgia, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the National Fencing Federation, Kharkiv defeated Estonian Katrina Lehis, the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and 2018 European champion, in the final.

The Ukrainian held the advantage for most of the fight, but in the end her opponent reduced the gap to a minimum. The fate of the gold medal was decided on the priority – 15:14 in favor of Ukraine.

Kharkova became only the second Ukrainian woman in history to win world gold in the individual epee championship, after Natalia Konrad, who won in 2003. Overall, she is the fifth world champion in the history of Ukrainian fencing.

This is Kharkiv’s first medal at the World Championships. Before that, her best result was 24th place (2022). In 2022, she already won gold at the European Championships.

Ukraine finished the first day of the 2025 World Cup at the top of the medal standings, sharing first place with Hong Kong, whose athlete Ryan Choi won the men’s foil tournament.
