Ukrainian doctors performed a unique surgery on an infant with a severe pathology – the clinical case has received worldwide recognition

In Ivano-Frankivsk, a team of pediatric surgeons together with foreign colleagues managed to perform a highly complex operation on a baby born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate.
This was reported bythe Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The operation, a one-step cheiloplasty of the bilateral cleft lip, was performed when the child was four months old. The procedure was performed by Turkish professor Hakan Agir, a world-renowned plastic surgeon.
Doctors say that the result is already impressive – the surgery has returned the child’s ability to develop and breathe normally.
International cooperation
Preparations for the intervention lasted from the first days after birth.
- a 3D scan of the baby’s face was made in Ivano-Frankivsk.
- In Turkey, these data were used to print individual NAM plates, which gradually corrected the shape of the jaw before the surgery.
- To deliver the plates to Ukraine, doctors had to organize complex international logistics.
The child’s parents carefully cared for the plates for three months and underwent regular check-ups.
“This is a severe pathology that requires team treatment. During her pregnancy, the mother sought advice, and in the first days of her life we began preparing for the operation,” said pediatric and plastic surgeon Orest Leshnevsky.
Recognition in the world
The clinical case of the Ukrainian team was presented at the 10th International Orthodontic Congress in Rio de Janeiro, where it received the award for the best clinical case in the world.
The doctors emphasize that such stories are proof of the development of Ukrainian pediatric medicine even in the difficult conditions of war.
