Ukraine has detained people who, on the instructions of the Russian Federal Security Service, arsonised shopping centres in the EU and were going to burn down a humanitarian aid centre in Poland. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the National Police of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, the defendants recruited pro-Russian individuals in Ukraine to carry out the instructions of the Russian Federation’s special service. The FSB’s requirement was that the arsonists had Ukrainian citizenship in order to discredit Ukraine in Europe. Forged documents were made for the men to be able to leave Ukraine under martial law and travel restrictions.

“We know for sure about several commercial establishments destroyed by fire in Poland and the Baltic States. The perpetrators also received an order to set fire to one of the humanitarian aid centres for Ukraine in Poland,” the statement said.

The group’s organiser and recruiter was a 39-year-old resident of Ivano-Frankivsk, who recruited several other citizens as accomplices.

Having direct contact with Russian intelligence officers, the recruiters received regular “orders” from their supervisors.

“The criminal group had its own hierarchical structure, where each member of the group played a different role. After determining the object for the future arson, the criminals produced forged official documents for the involved agents to enable them to travel abroad without hindrance,”

– the National Police said.

To receive the money, they opened bank accounts for fictitious persons, in particular for the purchase of fuel.

The members of the criminal group were detained in Ivano-Frankivsk region.

In total, searches were conducted in six regions of Ukraine.

The detainees face life imprisonment for high treason.
