Rakuten Viber warns users about a new fraudulent scheme that has been actively spreading in recent months. Attackers impersonate representatives of well-known companies or services to gain access to accounts. This was reported by the press service of Rakuten Viber, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs
In 2023-2024, Rakuten Viber has already blocked about 40 thousand fraudsters and spammers due to user complaints and constant monitoring. However, attackers continue to improve their methods, so it is important for users to know how to protect themselves.
How does the fraudulent scheme work?
According to the company, fraudsters send messages or make phone calls posing as employees of banks, mobile operators, or ad services. After that, the victim is asked to enter a code from the SMS, which is allegedly needed to confirm registration, change the tariff, or other actions.
At this stage, the attackers try to activate the Viber account on another device using the received code. If the user passes the code to third parties, fraudsters get full access to their account.
How can I protect my account?
Rakuten Viber provides several tips to prevent fraud:
- Do not share your activation codes and passwords with unauthorized persons. These data are the key to your account.
- Block suspicious contacts. If you receive a message from someone you don’t know, click “Block and report spam”.
- Customize your privacy. You can restrict messages and calls from unknown contacts in the menu: Settings => Privacy => Requests.
- Turn on automatic spam checking. To do this, go to the menu: Settings => Privacy => Automatic spam check.
- Use the caller ID feature. Android users can activate it in the menu: Settings => Calls & messages => Caller ID.
Rakuten Viber emphasizes: do not share your personal data, codes, or passwords with anyone, even if the message or call seems genuine. This will help you avoid losing access to your account and personal information.
