Ukraine will be hit by frosts down to -22 and floods: forecasters warn of danger

A sharp change in weather conditions is expected in Ukraine: after the coldest nights with temperatures dropping to -22 degrees, the country will experience a warming trend, bringing precipitation, fog, blizzards in the south, and the risk of flooding in a number of regions. Forecasters warn of difficult weather conditions, icy roads, and rising river levels. This was reported by forecaster Natalka Didenko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The coming days will be decisive: the Arctic cold will give way to spring warming, which could create dangerous weather conditions.
The coldest nights of winter: temperatures will drop to -22
According to weather forecasters, on the night of February 21-22, Ukraine will experience the strongest frost of this cold spell.
The following air temperatures are expected:
- in the north and west: down to -18…-22°C
- in the center and east: from -8 to -17°C
- in the south and west: from -2 to -6°C
Meteorologist Igor Kibalchich notes that the severe frosts will continue without significant precipitation, but wet snow is possible in the south of the Odesa region.
During the day, the temperature will be significantly higher:
- in the north: around -7°C
- in the center: from -3 to -6°C
- in the south: up to 3°C
Roads across the country remain icy, posing a danger to drivers and pedestrians.
After the frosts, there will be a sharp warming and precipitation
Forecasters predict a sharp warming starting on Sunday, February 23.
The air temperature will be:
- in most of Ukraine: from -1°C to 4°C
- in the south: up to 6°C
According to forecaster Natalka Didenko, the warming will be accompanied by:
- wet snow
- rain
- fog
- reduced visibility
Particularly unstable weather is expected in the southern regions.
Two cyclones will bring blizzards and flooding
After a period of high pressure, the weather situation will change under the influence of two cyclones, which will bring precipitation and temperature fluctuations.
Due to the sharp warming and melting of snow, there is an increased risk of:
- flooding
- rising water levels in rivers
- local floods
A particularly dangerous situation is forecast in:
- Odesa region
- Mykolaiv region
- Kirovohrad region
- Kharkiv region
- Cherkasy region
- Volyn region
- Polissya.

The State Emergency Service announced yellow and orange danger levels
The State Emergency Service warned of a possible rise in water levels between February 20 and 25.
Flooding may occur on the following rivers:
- Southern Bug
- Ingul
- Siverskyi Donets
- Savranka
- Kodima
- Velyka Vys
- Mertvovid
- Udy
- Lopan
- Merlo
- Pripyat sub-basin
The following has been announced in these regions:
- yellow danger level
- orange danger level in some places
Why is a sharp warming after frosts dangerous?
Forecasters explain that a sharp change in temperature can cause:
- destruction of ice cover on rivers
- flooding of low-lying areas
- black ice due to water freezing
- deterioration of road conditions
Transitional periods, when frost gives way to above-zero temperatures, are particularly dangerous.
When will Ukraine finally warm up?
According to weather forecasters, the cold weather will gradually recede starting next week.
The following is expected:
- temperature stabilization
- a transition to spring weather conditions
- a decrease in night frosts
However, before that, Ukrainians will have to endure the coldest nights of this winter and a dangerous period of weather fluctuations.
