on May 3, the Immortal Regiment march is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC. The event, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War, may take place in the US capital for the first time in several years.
Ukrinform writes about this with reference to an invitation booklet to the march, which was seen by journalists, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The march is scheduled to begin at 15:30 from Lafayette Square, located next to the White House. After that, the procession “with an orchestra, songs and portraits of our heroes” should move along Pennsylvania Avenue to the World War II memorial in downtown Washington.
There, participants will be able to lay flowers and watch a “small concert.”
According to Ukrinform’s sources familiar with the plans, the organizers said they have already received permission from the municipal authorities.
What is known about the event?
“Immortal Regiment” is a Russian propaganda public organization. It was registered in 2011 in Tomsk (Russia) by three journalists. The organization organizes marches of the same name with portraits and speeches honoring war veterans.
The initial goal of the public organization was to collect stories of military personnel through its website. In Russia and in pro-Russian circles outside of Russia, the action is mostly positioned as patriotic, while in other countries it is seen as provocative and speculative.
With the beginning of the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine and the Russian annexation of Crimea, against the background of a stimulated wave of patriotism in Russia, the organization’s events covered a large number of cities in Russia, actively began to be held abroad, and later, in 2016, openly received subsidies from the Russian budget in the form of grants.
