The government introduces new requirements for car sellers: now you can’t hide fuel costs

Ukrainian car dealerships are changing the rules of the game – now buyers of new passenger cars will be able to see how much fuel a car consumes and how much CO₂ emissions it produces. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
on September 25, the government adopted a resolution obliging sellers of new cars to provide buyers with official data on the efficiency and environmental friendliness of each model.
What do the new requirements entail?
From now on, all points of sale of new cars must have
- labels near each car with data on fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions
- aposter or electronic display with comparative information about all available models;
- promotional materials (advertising, brochures, catalogs) – with the same environmental indicators;
- an electronic guide with full official data, which will be posted on the website of the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development.
The Ministry of Development will be responsible for the creation and annual updating of this guide.
This decision is another step towards Ukraine’s European integration. The requirement is based on Directive 1999/94/EC of the European Parliament, which the EU introduced more than 20 years ago to make car choices more informed and help reduce harmful emissions.
“We are introducing European standards for informing car buyers. This is about protecting consumer rights, supporting fair competition, and a step towards reducing the impact of transportation on the climate. Ukrainians will be able to choose a car consciously, and businesses will receive clear rules that are already in place in the EU,” said Oleksiy Sobolev, Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine.
When will the new rules come into effect?
The resolution will come into force 9 months after its publication – this period is needed to prepare an electronic guide and adapt sales processes in car dealerships.
