10 dead in Odesa due to abnormal rainfall

In Odesa, relief efforts continue after a devastating rainstorm caused a large-scale flood. As of the evening of October 1, ten people have been reported dead, including a child. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Odesa is experiencing severe consequences of the natural disaster. Ten people, including a child, have already died due to the weather,” he said.

A day of mourning has been declared in the city for October 2.

Scale of destruction

According to Kuleba, more than a thousand residents have already called the rescue services due to flooding, falling trees and power outages.

About 300 private houses and 400 apartment buildings have been damaged by the storm. Many streets are without power, and some roads are blocked by fallen trees.

Compensation and state aid

Kuleba emphasized that the government’s main task is to help the victims:

“Our primary task is to support every family, provide compensation, help those who have lost their homes or property.”

A temporary commission has already been set up in Odesa to investigate the causes of the tragedy and find out why the public warning system failed – people did not receive timely warnings of risks and schools did not switch to remote mode.

A hotline for victims has also been set up. Anyone who has been flooded or lost property can call for help.

“The families of the victims and the injured will receive financial support. Compensation will be provided by the city and the region. A separate support program will help people recover,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Further actions

By October 3, Kuleba is to prepare a report to the country’s leadership with conclusions about the causes of the tragedy and proposals for a national response. In particular, it will include additional assistance to the victims and possible personnel decisions.

The government will pay special attention to the issues of flooded shelters – they are planned to be restored as soon as possible.
