Starting September 1 , 2025, about 3.5 million schoolchildren will start studying in Ukraine, of whom 400,000 will continue to receive education remotely. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadiia Kuzmychova during a national telethon, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Ukrinform.
“We expect that 3.5 million children will be enrolled as of September 1, and 88% of them will have the opportunity to study full-time or in a mixed format. This means that about 400 thousand children will continue their education in a distance format,” Kuzmychova said.
Geography of distance learning
According to the official, the largest share of children who remain in distance learning is in Kharkiv region, where most schools cannot operate in person due to the security situation. This category also includes children who have left Donetsk region or are still there.
Luhansk region is completely switching to a remote format – no educational institution will open for face-to-face learning.
In Kherson region, the situation is somewhat better: although most children will study online, eight schools in the region’s communities will still open their doors for full-time or blended learning.
Zaporizhzhia region also remains among the regions with a high level of distance learning – a significant number of students there will not return to classrooms.
Context
Distance learning in Ukraine has become a forced solution due to the full-scale war that has been going on since 2022. Educational institutions in the frontline and occupied regions are unable to provide safe conditions for face-to-face learning, so the government continues to develop online platforms, digital resources, and support for teachers.
