Tomatoes are getting more expensive in Ukraine: what caused the price hike
11 October 09:03
Prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine have soared by an average of 51% over the past week, reaching 50-60 UAH/kg. Analysts attribute this jump to a significant reduction in supply due to cold weather and high demand, which could trigger further price increases.
This was reported by analysts of the EastFruit project, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The main reason for the rise in price is the limited supply of tomatoes on the market. Producers attribute this to several factors:
- Due to the cold snap that has set in throughout Ukraine, harvesting in greenhouse plants has decreased significantly.
- Most small producers have almost finished selling their products. Those small batches that are still available are often of poor quality.
As a result, large greenhouse companies are selling vegetables in small batches, which cannot fully meet the high demand.
Despite such a sharp jump, it is worth noting that current prices for tomatoes in Ukraine are still on average 20% cheaper than in the same period last year.
Analysts and producers agree that the current price increase is likely not the last. Even after the price increase, demand for tomatoes remains consistently high. As a result, many producers have announced their intention to make another attempt to raise selling prices for their products next week.
