There is a critical imbalance between the number of births and deaths in Ukraine: in the first six months of 2025, there were three deaths for every newborn. Overall, the birth rate has decreased by 2.2 times over the past decade.
This is reported by Opendatabot with reference to statistics from the Ministry of Justice, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
In January-June of this year, 86,795 children were born in the country, while the number of deaths amounted to 249,002. Most children are born in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipropetrovs’k regions.
The highest mortality rate was recorded in Dnipropetrovs’k region – every 9th person dies there. The capital and Kharkiv region also have high mortality rates.
The birth rate is the lowest in the frontline regions. For example, in Donetsk region, it fell by 47% over the year. In Kherson region, it fell by 11%, and in Chernihiv region, by 10%.
In some regions, however, there is a positive trend. In Kyiv and Volyn regions, the birth rate increased by 6%, and in Lviv region – by 5%.
