The fishing ban is beginning in Ukraine: where and how fishing will be restricted
7 April 15:43
In April, seasonal fishing restrictions related to the spawning season will take effect in many bodies of water across Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
During this time, fish are actively reproducing, so the government is implementing special rules to preserve populations in natural water bodies.
Where the ban is already in effect
Some of the restrictions have already taken effect. In particular, the spawning ban is in effect on the Dnipro Reservoir.
Starting April 10, the restrictions will also apply to other large water bodies:
- Kyiv Reservoir
- Kaniv Reservoir
- Kremenchuk Reservoir
- Kamyanske Reservoir
- Dniester Reservoir
- Pechenez Reservoir
The restrictions also apply to the Dnipro and Desna rivers.
The duration of the ban varies depending on the region and the specific body of water.
Is fishing allowed?
Fishing is not completely prohibited during the spawning season, but the rules are much stricter.
You may fish:
- only from the shore;
- outside of spawning grounds;
- using hook-and-line tackle with a maximum of two hooks per person;
- or with a spinning rod using a single artificial lure.
The list of areas where fishing is prohibited, as well as permitted areas for recreational fishing, is determined by the regional offices of the State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine.
Additional restrictions on water bodies
Additional rules apply during the spawning season.
In particular, the following are prohibited:
- the movement of motorboats and vehicles outside designated waterways;
- commercial fishing;
- underwater hunting.
Exceptions are made only for vessels used by fisheries protection services or other authorized government agencies.
What are the penalties for violations
Violations of spawning restrictions are subject to the following penalties:
- administrative fines;
- compensation for damages caused to the fishing industry;
- in serious cases — criminal liability.
During this period, inspectors from the State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine are conducting enhanced monitoring at water bodies to prevent illegal fishing.
