Cucumbers have become cheaper in Ukraine: the main reasons

5 April 04:02

Last week, wholesale prices for greenhouse cucumbers began to fall in Ukraine, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The warm and, in some places, sunny weather that has settled in the country has significantly accelerated the ripening of local greenhouse vegetables. Cucumber harvests on farms grew rapidly, and due to the sharp increase in supply, producers were forced to gradually lower their selling prices.

As a result, by the weekend, Ukrainian greenhouse complexes were selling cucumbers for 125–165 UAH/kg ($2.85–3.77/kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than a week earlier.

Market participants attribute the downward price trend to a significant drop in demand amid still relatively high prices for greenhouse vegetables. The supply of cucumbers continues to increase rapidly. Harvest volumes at greenhouse complexes rose noticeably this week thanks to favorable weather conditions. At the same time, supplies of cheaper imported produce remain stable, with prices generally not exceeding 100 UAH/kg ($2.28/kg).

Despite the current price decline, greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine are currently selling for an average of 25% more than during the same period last year.
