Ukraine has tightened its power rationing schedules for April 2: what will change
2 April 00:21
On April 2, power restriction schedules for industrial consumers will be in effect across all regions of Ukraine from 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This is longer than the previous day: on April 1, restrictions for industry were in effect from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., i.e., only five hours. Ukrenergo announced the new time frame, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The company explained that the reason for tightening the schedules is the impact of Russian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities.
Energy officials also urged Ukrainians to shift the use of high-power electrical appliances to the period from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and to conserve electricity in the morning and evening.
What exactly will change on April 2
The main change concerns the duration of restrictions for industry. While on April 1, Ukrenergo implemented power restriction schedules in all regions for only five hours, on April 2, the restrictions will last for ten consecutive hours—from midnight to 10 a.m. This means that the load on the power grid is expected to be heavier than the previous day.
At the same time, Ukrenergo’s statements emphasize that these restrictions apply specifically to industrial consumers.
At the time the new schedules were announced, the company did not report the introduction of planned outages for residential consumers across the country.
Why Ukrenergo has tightened the schedules
The company directly links the new restrictions to Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. Damage to energy facilities reduces available capacity in the system, forcing dispatchers to limit consumption wherever possible, primarily in the industrial sector.
Earlier, Ukrenergo also reported new power outages following attacks in several regions, with the situation in Sumy Oblast described as the most critical. Additionally, energy officials noted that due to air raid alerts and the threat of repeat strikes, restoration work cannot always begin immediately.
Why electricity consumption has risen
The weather is also putting additional strain on the system. According to Ukrenergo, electricity consumption rose at the start of the week due to cloud cover and rain, which reduced the efficiency of residential solar power plants. Specifically, as of 9:30 a.m. on March 31, consumption was 2.7% higher than the previous workday.
Thus, the system is facing two problems simultaneously: on the one hand, damage from attacks; on the other, increased consumption due to the weather. It is the combination of these factors that explains why the restrictions on April 2 were extended.
What Ukrainians are advised to do
Ukrenergo is asking the public not to create additional peak loads and, if possible, to postpone the use of high-power equipment to the hours between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The company specifically identified this time window as more appropriate for energy-intensive activities.
Separately, energy officials emphasize that the situation in the power grid may change, so Ukrainians should monitor the latest updates from their regional power companies. This is particularly important for businesses and manufacturing facilities that are directly affected by power restrictions.
What this means for business and industry
For industrial enterprises, April 2 will mean a longer period of consumption restrictions, and thus the need to adjust production schedules, loads, and equipment operation.
In fact, this is not about emergency blackouts across the board, but rather a controlled load reduction regime for large consumers. This allows the system to maintain balance following shelling and avoids imposing broader restrictions on the general public. This interpretation stems from the format of the announced schedules, which are specifically addressed to the industrial sector.
