Tomato prices have skyrocketed in Ukraine

Prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine continued to rise this week, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The main reason for the price increase in this segment is insufficient supply of vegetables on the domestic market. Market operators also note rising tomato prices directly in Turkey—the main supplier of this product to Ukraine—which is linked to increased shipments to European Union countries.

As a result, over the past 7 days, prices for greenhouse tomatoes on the Ukrainian market have risen by an average of 10%, and this product is currently being offered for sale at 160–180 UAH/kg ($3.68–4.14/kg).

According to market participants, the rise in tomato prices in Ukraine is driven by strong demand for the product amid limited supply. It is worth noting that the market remains dominated by imported produce, as local greenhouse complexes have only just begun harvesting vegetables, and harvest volumes are still minimal.

It is worth noting that at present, prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are already, on average, 77% higher than during the same period last year. At the same time, sellers do not rule out that price growth in this segment may pause as early as the second half of this month. They attribute this to the arrival of a new crop of tomatoes from most Ukrainian greenhouse complexes entering the market.
