In Lviv, doctors performed a complex operation on a newborn’s brain to save the child from the effects of a stroke. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the post of the Of the First Medical Association of Lviv on its Facebook page.
The operation was performed by neurosurgeons at St Nicholas Children’s Hospital.
Their patient, weighing 2.5 kg, was born two weeks earlier. The child was immediately diagnosed with pneumonia, and a little later with a brain haemorrhage. The baby was also diagnosed with hydrocephalus. This is an intracranial accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid – cerebrospinal fluid, which, without intervention, inevitably leads to organ damage. Moreover, as a result of the stroke, blood clots formed in the ventricles and had to be removed as soon as possible.
Neurosurgeons Taras Mykytyn and Ihor Homeniuk decided to operate on the child immediately. During the first surgery, the doctors used a special device – a neuroendoscope – to remove the blood clots through a small incision of just a few millimetres. Without this operation, the baby’s brain could have been severely damaged.
During the second surgery, doctors fitted the child with an Ommaya reservoir. This is a device that allows doctors to easily remove excess fluid from the child’s brain and regulate cerebrospinal pressure in case of repeated swelling.
Now the operated baby is feeling better. But for some time to come, the child will stay in the hospital under the care of doctors.
