10-kopeck coins will disappear from circulation in Ukraine: what you should know

18 September 2025 00:17

10 kopiyka coins will be gradually withdrawn from cash circulation starting October 1, 2025. The relevant decision was made by the National Bank of Ukraine, according to the Resolution of the NBU Board of September 8, 2025, No. 115, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The regulator explains that 10 kopecks coins remain legal tender. Banks, retailers, and service providers will continue to accept them in payments.

Citizens do not need to specifically hand in or exchange such coins – they will simply gradually disappear from circulation.

How it will work

Starting from October 1, 2025, banks

  • will not issue 10-kopiika coins from cash registers during cash transactions;
  • will not receive reinforcement from the NBU in this denomination;
  • coins that get into cash desks will no longer be returned to circulation, but will be transferred to the NBU for recycling and disposal.

At the same time, if a buyer or seller has coins of this denomination, they will continue to be able to make payments or receive change.

Why it is necessary

According to the NBU, there are about 5.5 billion change coins in circulation today, of which 4.1 billion are 10 kopiykas. This is more than a quarter of the total. At the same time, the demand for these coins among banks and retailers has fallen significantly.

The withdrawal of 10-kopiika coins will reduce the costs of the state and cash circulation participants for minting, transportation, storage, and processing of such small denominations.

Rounding of amounts

In the absence of 10-kopiika coins, rounding rules similar to those in force after the withdrawal of 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopiika coins will be applied.

amounts ending in 1-24 kopiykas will be reduced to 00 kopiykas;

  • 25-49 kopecks – increase to 50 kopecks;
  • 51-74 kopiykas – decrease to 50 kopiykas;
  • 75-99 kopiykas – increase to the nearest hryvnia.

Important: rounding will apply only to the total amount in the check in cash payments. There will be no changes for non-cash transactions.

The NBU emphasizes that the previous experience of applying similar rules did not have a significant impact on inflation, as it is not about changes in prices for individual goods, but about the total amount of the purchase.

Thus, 10-kopeck coins will be in circulation for some time to come, but their role in payments will gradually diminish.
