Australian humanitarian mission volunteer killed in Ukraine

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed the death of an Australian volunteer in Ukraine who did not take part in hostilities but worked for a humanitarian organization. This was reported byReuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to Albanese, the volunteer was not a soldier, and the government is currently limited in its comments to preserve the privacy of the victim’s family. The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already providing support.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the volunteer and his British colleague were killed last week near Izyum, Kharkiv region, as a result of an improvised explosive device exploding in a building.
The deceased worked for the American organization Prevail Together, which helps Ukrainian government agencies with demining and provides medical and humanitarian assistance.
Last week, it also became known that the co-founder of this organization, 40-year-old Briton Chris Garrett, had died. In a statement, the organization said that he and several other colleagues were seriously injured near Izium.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 210 foreign civilians, including humanitarian volunteers, from more than 25 countries have been killed. These figures include both representatives of international charitable organizations and independent volunteers who provided assistance in the war zone.
In September 2023, two volunteers of the Road to Relief organization, Spaniard Emma Igal and Canadian Anthony Ignat, were killed by Russian shelling near the town of Chasiv Yar.
In July 2022, a Russian missile strike on a community center in Chuhuiv killed two World Central Kitchen volunteers, Sardor Khakimov from Uzbekistan and a volunteer named Victoria.
In September 2024, three employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross were killed in shelling in the Donetsk region.
In addition, many foreign volunteers who took part in the fighting on the side of Ukraine were also killed. According to an unofficial resource, there are over 700 such cases.
