Ukraine changes the date of temporary occupation of Mariupol: what it means
30 April 06:41
Ukraine has updated the date of the temporary occupation of Mariupol by Russia. Instead of March 4, 2022, it is now officially set for May 21, 2022. This was reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“This decision is about historical justice and recognition of the real circumstances of the heroic defense of Mariupol. It is important both for our military and for the city’s residents who survived the blockade and shelling. This is a step towards honesty in assessing the events, and I thank everyone who joined this process – from the military and local authorities to representatives of central government,” said Oleksiy Ryabikin, Deputy Minister of Communities and Territories Development.
According to the ministry, the updated date will not affect payments to internally displaced persons from Mariupol. At the same time, it will eliminate injustice to people who became disabled during the period of active hostilities until May 20, 2022.
On April 4, the Ministry of Development addressed the Donetsk Regional Military Administration with a request to clarify the date of the temporary occupation of the city of Mariupol and Mariupol district. At that time, the General Staff reported that the fighting for the city lasted until May 18, 2022, and since May 21, Mariupol has been considered fully occupied by the Russians.
It should be noted that in 2022, Mariupol became a symbol of the resilience and indomitability of the Ukrainian people. For 86 days, its residents survived massive Russian shelling, air strikes and a blockade.
However, it turned out that for the Ukrainian state , wounded Mariupol residents who suffered after March 5, 2022, do not fall under the definition of victims of hostilities.
