Tomato prices have risen again in Ukraine: what are the reasons?

8 February 16:23

Ukraine is seeing another price increase in the greenhouse tomato segment, according to analysts at EastFruit, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

As prices rise, demand for imported tomatoes is gradually weakening, but importers continue to raise prices in this segment. Sellers justify their actions by citing high prices for these vegetables in Turkey, from where the main supplies of this product to the Ukrainian market traditionally come during the winter period.

Thus, representatives of wholesale companies this week actively raised the selling prices for imported tomatoes to 120-140 UAH/kg ($2.78-3.25/kg), which is on average 10% more expensive than a week earlier.

Another reason for the rise in prices for greenhouse tomatoes was the limited supply of this product on the market. Thus, today, the main supply on the Ukrainian market consists exclusively of imported products, since Ukrainian greenhouse complexes will enter the market with a new turnover no earlier than mid-March.

It should be noted that prices for greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are currently on average 38% higher than in the same period last year.
