Due to the consequences of Russian shelling, there will be a stable demand for new generating capacity in Ukraine over the next few years. In the near future, Ukraine’s energy system will require approximately 9.5 GW of new generation capacity. This was stated by Vitaliy Zaychenko, chairman of the board of NEC Ukrenergo, according to the company’s Telegram channel, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
“We are talking about highly maneuverable gas generation, biofuel thermal power plants, energy storage facilities, and green generation. Each region needs a separate ‘mix’, depending on geographical conditions and the possibilities for transmitting electricity from nuclear power plants. Some places have more sun and wind, while others are better suited to gas piston and gas turbine installations,” said the head of Ukrenergo.
He stressed that the state and business must therefore establish effective cooperation so that these power plants appear as quickly as possible and exactly where they are most needed.
“The state’s task now is to create conditions for attracting investment in the construction of these power plants. The estimated cost of such construction is over €8 billion,” said the chairman of Ukrenergo’s board.
As an example of effective cooperation between the state and business in the energy sector, Zaychenko cited long-term special auctions for the provision of ancillary services.
The company reported that thanks to four special auctions held in 2004-2025, 464 MW of completely new, highly maneuverable generation has already appeared in Ukraine’s energy system, which significantly helps energy companies to cope with periods of peak loads.
