Important for those traveling to Poland: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated information regarding border closures

22 January 13:55

On January 23, Polish farmers will hold a protest near the Ukrainian-Polish border without blocking traffic to the Dolgobychiv-Ugryniv checkpoint. This was reported to Ukrinform by Oleg Kuts, Consul General of Ukraine in Lublin, following a meeting with local authorities and police, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Tomorrow, January 23, Polish farmers plan to start a strike near the border with Ukraine. This may cause traffic complications at border crossing points.

According to customs officials, Polish farmers intend to strike in front of the Dolgobychiv-Ugryniv checkpoint.

The blockade of the road leading to the checkpoint from the Polish side is expected to last from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Polish time.

At the same time, the organizers of the action say that the protest may continue throughout the day on January 23.

There are no plans to block traffic.

According to the diplomat, farmers are only allowed to hold a public gathering along the roadside without obstructing traffic in the direction of the border with Ukraine.

“Farmers plan to hold a public gathering on the side of the road on January 23 without obstructing traffic. In the event of a traffic blockage, the police will contact the local authorities to stop the gathering,” said Oleg Kuts, Consul General of Ukraine in Lublin.

He stressed that the farmers did not receive permission to block the road, as they were officially warned by both local authorities and law enforcement agencies.

Position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and monitoring of the situation

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the Ukrainian diplomatic mission is in constant contact with the Polish side.

According to Oleg Kuts, the Consulate General of Ukraine in Lublin is doing everything possible to prevent delays in the delivery of humanitarian and energy aid to Ukraine amid the difficult situation in the energy sector caused by Russian shelling.

Reasons for the Polish farmers’ protest

Polish farmers say they are protesting against:

  • what they consider to be uncompetitive conditions for the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into Poland;
  • the trade agreement between the European Union and South American countries.

Is there confirmation of traffic restrictions?

Earlier, Svitlana Burda, spokesperson for the 7th Carpathian Border Guard Unit, reported that no official confirmation had been received from the Polish side regarding possible traffic restrictions on January 23.

What is known about previous blockades

The Polish-Ukrainian border has already been blocked:

  • from November 2023 to January 2024 — by Polish carriers;
  • from February to April 2024 — by Polish farmers.

At that time, protesters also claimed unfair competition with Ukrainian farmers and uncontrolled imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.

Despite the renewal of the Ukraine-EU trade agreement, Poland has maintained an embargo on imports of a number of Ukrainian crops — wheat, corn, rapeseed, sunflower, and certain processed products — since October 29, which was introduced in April 2023.
