From economic victories to Greenland: what Trump told Europe and Ukraine in Davos
21 January 19:55
US President Donald Trump delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, in which he combined a demonstration of his own achievements, sharp criticism of Europe, and his traditional statements on Ukraine and Greenland, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
Self-assessment and “refuting the experts”
Trump began his speech with a list of his administration’s successes, citing a reduction in migration and inflation and an improvement in key economic indicators. He insisted that the predictions of “almost all experts” about recession and inflation due to his policies had not come true, and that the US remained the “economic engine” of the world.
Criticism of Europe
A separate section of the speech was devoted to Europe, which Trump, despite his declarations of sympathy, accused of pursuing the wrong course. In his opinion, the EU’s problems are primarily related to immigration and economic policy. The phrase “I no longer recognize Europe” became one of the key quotes of the speech.
Greenland as a point of tension
Trump returned to the topic of Greenland, which has become a source of irritation in US-European relations in recent weeks. He said he respects the people of Greenland and Denmark, but insisted that only the United States can guarantee the island’s security. At the same time, the president effectively issued a political ultimatum, saying that Washington would “remember” the rejection of the American proposal, although he formally ruled out the use of force.
Ukraine in the context of the “inherited war”
Speaking about Russia’s war against Ukraine, Trump repeated the thesis that he “inherited” this conflict from the previous administration. He again cited an inflated, unofficial figure for US aid to Ukraine and stated that Vladimir Putin allegedly wants peace. According to him, the main goal is to “stop the war,” as tens of thousands of people are dying every day.
At the same time, Trump expressed hope for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, on the eve of the meeting, Zelensky remained in Kyiv due to another Russian attack and stressed that Ukraine’s participation in Davos only makes sense if it yields real results.
Trump questioned the reliability of NATO
During his speech, Trump also questioned the reliability of NATO as a defense alliance.
“The problem with NATO is that we will be there for them 100 percent. But I’m not sure they will be there for us,” the US president said.
He stated that the United States is unconditionally ready to defend its allies, but is not sure about the reciprocity of these commitments.
