Open the Druzhba oil pipeline: Orbán appeals to Zelensky in an open letter

26 February 10:12

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent an “open letter” to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing Kyiv of influencing the upcoming elections.

This was reported by"Komersant Ukrainian"with reference to the Hungarian prime minister’sTwitter account.

“For four years, you have been working to force Hungary into a war between your country and Russia. During this time, you have received support from Brussels and enlisted the support of the Hungarian opposition,” Orban said.

According to him, Ukraine, Brussels, and the Hungarian opposition are allegedly coordinating their efforts to bring a pro-Ukrainian government to power in Hungary.

“In recent days, you have blocked the Druzhba oil pipeline, which is crucial for Hungary’s energy supply. Your actions are contrary to Hungary’s interests and jeopardize the safe and affordable energy supply of Hungarian families,” he added.

The Hungarian prime minister also called on Ukraine to change its “anti-Hungarian policy.” He also added that he allegedly bears no responsibility for the situation in which Ukraine finds itself.

“We sympathize with the Ukrainian people, but we do not want to participate in the war. We do not want to finance the war effort and we do not want to pay more for energy,” Orban added.

In conclusion, he also called for the Druzhba oil pipeline to be reopened and for “further attacks on Hungary’s energy security” to be refrained from.

What preceded

Recently, the political crisis between Ukraine and Hungary has escalated again against the backdrop of the situation with the Druzhba oil pipeline, which Moscow attacked, making it impossible to supply energy resources to Hungary and Slovakia.

At the same time, Orbán accuses Kyiv of unwillingness to resume the operation of the oil pipeline, citing political reasons.

Zelensky, in turn, suggested that Orbán negotiate an energy truce with Moscow if he has any complaints about the situation.

Despite the disputes, the Ukrainian side offered Hungary a compromise to resolve the situation with the Druzhba oil pipeline.
