“War on cartels”: Trump announces possible military action in Mexico

US President Donald Trump has stated that the US will soon begin military operations “on the ground” in Mexico. The American president intends to fight against the cartels that allegedly “control Mexico.”
According to "Komersant Ukrainian", Trump made this statement in an interview with Fox News.
“We will start acting locally against the cartels. The cartels control Mexico. It is very sad to see what has happened to this country,” he said.
Trump added that “we have destroyed 97% of drugs coming by water,” referring to a series of strikes on boats off the coast of Venezuela. He noted that cartels “kill 300,000 people in the US every year.”
“Drugs… it’s terrible. It devastates families. You lose a child or a parent. I mean, parents are dying from drugs too. So we’ve done a really good job,” he said.
At the same time, the US president noted that the US border is now “closed,” although before Trump, he said, it had been “in complete disarray for years.”
“I did it very quickly the first time. And this time I did it even better because it was a bigger mess. It was a border that probably didn’t exist in the history of the world. There has never been a border where anyone could just walk into your country. The border is now supposedly really closed. Closed. You can’t get in. And no one is getting in. No one even tries,” he assured.
Recall that after a successful operation in Venezuela on January 3, when the country’s dictator Nicolas Maduro was captured, Trump made threats against Mexico and its president Claudia Sheinbaum. At that time, the US president also said that Mexico was allegedly “run by cartels” and that “something had to be done” about it.
Sheinbaum herself made it clear that she does not believe that US President Donald Trump’s threats to invade Mexico are really serious. She added that she is ready to cooperate with the US in the fight against drug trafficking and condemned the American operation in Venezuela.
