Volvo recalls over 400,000 crossovers: what is the danger
9 January 06:49
Swedish automaker Volvo Cars has announced a large-scale recall of vehicles in the US market. The service campaign affects 413,151 crossovers that have been found to have problems with their rearview cameras. This was reported by Reuters, citing official data from the US regulator, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
What is the reason for the recall?
As explained by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the defect is related to a software glitch that may prevent the rearview camera from turning on or cause it to malfunction. This increases the risk of accidents when maneuvering, especially in parking lots.
The problem affects Volvo XC40s manufactured between 2021 and 2025 that were sold on the US market.
Second recall in a year
This is a repeat recall of these vehicles. In May last year, the company already conducted a service campaign for the same reason. However, during further operation, an additional vulnerability was found in the software that causes the same symptoms.
Volvo noted that the previous update did not completely eliminate the risks, so the software needs further refinement.
How the malfunction will be fixed
To solve the problem, the automaker is preparing a software update that will be available in the coming weeks. Car owners will be able to obtain the fix free of charge in two ways:
- at official Volvo dealerships;
- via over-the-air (OTA) update without having to visit a service center.
The company is currently completing testing of the final version of the software before mass deployment.
Does this apply to Ukrainian drivers?
The service campaign was initiated specifically for the US market, but it is also important for Ukraine. The Volvo XC40 model is popular on the Ukrainian secondary market, particularly among cars imported from the US.
All 2021-2025 XC40s sold in the US are subject to recall regardless of which country they are currently in. Owners of such vehicles are advised to check the VIN code and contact an official Volvo service center.
