Enemy strikes and freezing days: what Ukraine is doing to keep the lights on in homes
13 January 19:10
Following new attacks by Russian troops on energy infrastructure and severe frosts, Ukraine has experienced problems with adequate energy supply. The Cabinet of Ministers and relevant services are working to balance the system and ensure the livelihoods of citizens. This was reported by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Key steps taken by the government
- Connecting additional capacity:
A review of critical infrastructure facilities has allowed 1 GW of electrical capacity to be added to the grid, which helps maintain balance in difficult conditions. - Cooperation with retail chains:
The Minister of Economy is monitoring the supply of food to people in regions where energy supply is difficult. - Generators for residential areas of Kyiv:
The State Emergency Service is installing powerful generators to provide electricity to residential buildings and reduce the load on the grid. - Resilience centers:
Additional points are being deployed throughout the country, taking into account the situation on the ground, to ensure access to basic services. - Local control:
Heads of regional state administrations and relevant ministries personally coordinate complex situations, visit the sites, and maintain communication with people. - Fuel reserves:
The government ensures the availability and price stability of fuel for generators and critical facilities. - Restoration of power generation and electricity imports:
At the same time, electricity imports are being increased and repairs are being carried out at all energy facilities.

What about the energy infrastructure?
The enemy is attacking the energy infrastructure, and low temperatures and icing of the networks are putting additional strain on the system. The government is calling on citizens to use electricity sparingly.

These measures are aimed at maintaining the stability of the energy system and ensuring the livelihoods of citizens during difficult weather conditions and military threats.

In the capital, about 500 buildings remain without heat, and some supermarkets in Kyiv and the region have temporarily suspended operations due to power outages.
