Enemy attacks and freezing temperatures: what Ukraine is doing to keep the lights on in homes
13 January 19:10
Following new attacks by Russian forces on energy infrastructure and severe cold weather, Ukraine has faced challenges in maintaining a stable energy supply. The Cabinet of Ministers and relevant agencies are working to stabilize the system and ensure the basic needs of citizens are met. This was reported by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Key government measures
- Connecting additional capacity:
A review of critical infrastructure facilities allowed for the addition of 1 GW of electrical capacity to the grid, which helps maintain balance under difficult conditions. - Cooperation with retail chains:
The Minister of Economy is monitoring the supply of food to people in regions where power supply is disrupted. - Generators for residential neighborhoods in Kyiv:
The State Emergency Service is installing powerful generators to provide electricity to residential buildings and reduce the load on the grid. - Resilience centers:
Additional resilience centers are being deployed across the country, taking into account local conditions, to ensure access to basic services. - On-site oversight:
Heads of regional state administrations and relevant ministries are personally coordinating complex situations, visiting sites, and maintaining communication with the public. - Fuel reserves:
The government ensures the availability of fuel and price stability for generators and critical infrastructure. - Restoration of power generation and electricity imports:
At the same time, electricity imports are being increased and repair work is being carried out at all energy facilities.

The enemy is attacking energy infrastructure, and low temperatures and icing on power lines are placing additional strain on the system. The government urges citizens to use electricity sparingly.

These measures are aimed at maintaining the stability of the power grid and ensuring the livelihoods of citizens during severe weather conditions and the military threat.

In the capital, about 500 buildings remain without heat, and some supermarkets in Kyiv and the surrounding region have temporarily suspended operations due to power outages.
