Due to a new EU tax: flights from Europe will become more expensive

13 May 15:17

The European Union intends to extend the ETS climate levy to international flights. The ETS is a system under which companies pay for greenhouse gas emissions, including CO₂. Currently, airlines pay this levy only on flights within the EU, reports "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Western media outlets.

For example, a flight from Dublin to Paris is already subject to the levy, while a flight from Paris to New York is not. Brussels considers this a loophole and wants to close it.

If the new rules are adopted, airlines will have to pay more for long-haul international flights. This could most significantly affect flights from the EU to destinations outside its borders. Some of the new costs will likely be passed on to passengers, so ticket prices may rise.

According to preliminary estimates, the ETS currently increases the cost of an intra-EU flight by approximately €7. If the levy is extended to all flights, the average additional cost for airlines could be around €45 per ticket. This represents new costs for carriers to cover CO₂ emissions, not a guaranteed price increase of that amount for every ticket.

A final decision on the ETS revision is expected in July 2026. The EU expects that expanding the levy will help reduce emissions and bring in additional billions of euros to the budget.
