Extorted $300 thousand and threatened with arrest: SBU officer to stand trial

The NABU and the SAPO have sent to court criminal proceedings against the head of the sector of the Department for the Protection of National Statehood of the Security Service of Ukraine and his two accomplices on the fact of extortion of illegal benefits. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the NABU press service.
According to the investigation, the SBU official, together with his accomplices, demanded USD 300 thousand from a person he was accompanying. USD from a person whom he accompanied in a case of illegal transportation of persons liable for military service abroad.
In exchange for the money, he promised to destroy part of the case file and not to disclose the facts already established. In case of refusal, the offender threatened to bring the person to criminal liability under more severe articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine related to the foundations of national security.
Law enforcement officers detained the offenders after receiving a part of the illegal benefit in the amount of USD 72 thousand. THE OFFENDERS WERE DETAINED AFTER RECEIVING A PART OF THE ILLEGAL BENEFIT IN THE AMOUNT OF USD 72 THOUSAND.
The actions of the SBU Sector Chief are qualified under Part 4 Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, his accomplices – under Part 5 Article 27 and Part 4 Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The case was referred to the court for consideration on the merits, which will be the next step in bringing to justice for corruption in law enforcement.
