Apple forecast: a market expert tells us when the price of apples will fall

Apple prices in Ukraine reached record highs in early October, but experts predict that they will stabilise and possibly decline in the coming months. In an exclusive commentary to Komersant ukrainskyi
, Dmytro Kroshka, Chairman of the Ukrainian Agrarian Export Association, explained the reasons for the current situation and gave a forecast for the future.
Contrary to popular belief, the summer heat only indirectly affected the high prices for apples, the expert says.
“Currently, apple prices are very high, and the key reason for this is the high demand for apples for processing, the so-called technical apple. The summer heat that we had this year affected all fresh agricultural products, including fruits, vegetables and berries. However, fruits, in particular apples, which are produced by irrigation systems, and there are a lot of them today, were hardly affected by the drought,”
– says Kroshka.
According to him, the summer heat affected the quality of apples in orchards without irrigation, which led to higher prices for technical apples. And the high price of technical apples forces farmers to refrain from selling commercial apples:
“The farmer tries not to sell commercial apples as much as possible, expecting an even higher price. But, in my opinion, this is a temporary factor.”

That is why Kroshka is optimistic in his forecasts. The expert believes that farmers will soon stop holding onto their commercial apples in anticipation of an even better price and start putting them on the market. This will increase supply, and the price will start to fall.
“I expect the price of apples to stabilise at least in October. And when the producer starts selling apples en masse, I think that the price drop to a certain level will continue steadily for a long time, even after the New Year,”

The expert also notes that Ukraine is expected to have a bumper apple harvest this year, which will contribute to low prices. Therefore, apple prices will be low for a very long time, probably until the summer.
“I think we will not see the rapid fluctuations and price increases we are seeing today until next summer, when apple stocks will be falling,”

Thus, according to the expert, Ukrainians will soon have the opportunity to enjoy their favourite fruit at reasonable prices.
