What vegetables fell in price in Ukraine in May 2025: latest prices and forecasts

9 May 14:46

In May 2025, prices for tomatoes, cucumbers, and cabbage fell in Ukrainian stores. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Agronews.

The reduction in prices is due to an increase in the supply of greenhouse products, seasonal factors, and low demand for vegetables from last year’s harvest.

Tomatoes

Prices for greenhouse tomatoes decreased by an average of 18% compared to the end of April. The average cost of red tomatoes is about 97.83 UAH/kg, and in some supermarkets, they can be purchased for 84.90 UAH/kg. Pink tomatoes fell from 189.51 UAH to 144.90 UAH/kg. The only exception is the Slyvka variety, which went up from 145.25 UAH to 157.80 UAH/kg.

Cucumbers

Greenhouse cucumbers also show a downward trend in price. The average price has almost halved compared to April. Smooth cucumbers cost an average of 71.93 UAH/kg, and in the Metro chain they can be found at 59.90 UAH/kg. Prickly cucumbers fell from 138.58 UAH to 74.90 UAH/kg, and short-fruited cucumbers – from 125.43 UAH to 79.80 UAH/kg.

Cabbage

Prices for white cabbage from last year’s harvest declined due to deterioration in quality during storage and weak demand. As of April 30, it was sold for no more than 40-48 UAH/kg. Meanwhile, prices for cabbage from the new harvest remained high, at up to 90 UAH/kg in supermarkets.

Other vegetables

Prices for radishes, Chinese cabbage, lettuce, and green onions have also declined. For example, in Ternopil markets, cabbage costs 45 to 55 UAH/kg, cucumbers – up to 35 UAH/kg, and radishes – up to 40 UAH/kg. Vendors say that prices are gradually decreasing due to an increase in the supply of local vegetables.

Forecasts

Summer 2025 promises both good news and challenges for Ukrainian consumers. According to economists and agricultural analysts, most seasonal fruits and vegetables will be cheaper in June and August than in previous months, but prices will remain higher than the pre-war average.

Cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, and zucchini will see the biggest drop in price, as vegetables from the open field will start to arrive on the market in June. According to preliminary estimates, cucumbers will cost an average of 25-40 UAH/kg, tomatoes – 30-55 UAH/kg, and young cabbage – 20-35 UAH/kg. The price will depend on the region, weather conditions and harvest volumes.

Among the fruits, we can expect a decrease in prices for strawberries, cherries, apricots, peaches and apples of the new harvest. During the peak season, strawberries can cost 40-60 UAH/kg, cherries – 60-90 UAH/kg, and domestic apples – from 25 UAH/kg. Prices will be affected by weather risks, which have already manifested themselves in the form of spring frosts, which can reduce yields in orchards.

Experts also note that due to inflation and rising logistics and fertilizer costs, the total cost of products will remain unstable. Imported fruits, such as bananas, citrus fruits, and grapes, are likely to rise in price by 10-15% compared to spring.

In general, May 2025 is characterized by positive dynamics in vegetable prices, which is good news for consumers. However, it is worth considering possible price fluctuations due to weather conditions and other factors.
