Eggs are getting more expensive again: what will cause the December price increase in Ukraine

In Ukraine, prices for chicken eggs will not change significantly by the end of November, but in December they will increase by 15-20%.
This was announced by the executive director of the Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine Sergiy Karpenko, UNIAN reports, "Komersant Ukrainian".
“With the beginning of the shutdowns and a drop in demand, we have seen a 20% decrease in sales prices for both poultry meat and eggs. Most likely, in November, selling prices will be influenced by this factor and will not change significantly,” he said.
According to the expert, after the November decline in egg prices in December, we should expect their growth to the level of October.
Mr. Karpenko emphasized that rising production costs of poultry farmers put the most pressure on prices, and the use of generators could further increase the cost of chicken eggs.
“Incubation and then rearing of young laying hens requires strict adherence to technological indicators of poultry keeping for four months, which cannot be achieved without ensuring a stable and uninterrupted supply of electricity,” the expert said.
According to him, electricity accounts for 7 to 12% of the cost of poultry production, and for some types of products this figure can reach 30%.
The production of poultry products consists of several stages, and an increase in costs at each stage leads to an increase in the total cost. As the expert explains, the final cost of the industry’s products can increase “geometrically”.
Another important factor is the rise in the cost of feed, which accounts for the largest share of the cost and also requires electricity for production. This leads to a chain effect: the costs of all the components that form the price of poultry meat and eggs increase.
