EU cannot override Orban’s veto – Borrell on the crisis of support for Ukraine

Due to Hungary’s position, 6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Fund, which were intended for military support for Ukraine, have been blocked. This was announced by the former head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell in an interview with EUObserver, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The politician voiced this information when commenting on the possibility of overcoming Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s veto of European sanctions against Russia in the future.
“Sanctions are unanimously approved by the EU countries. This is the way it is. We are not going to change this, because it would require changing the treaties. This will not happen. But it’s not just sanctions,” Borrell said.
According to him, since he left office, Ukraine has not received any new military aid from the EU.
“6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Fund was blocked because of Hungary. This was the end of this instrument. Now everything should be bilateral. And if Hungary refuses to renew the sanctions, they cannot be renewed. We are stuck,” he explained.
It is worth recalling that earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had already threatened the EU to veto the budget for 2028-2034 because it provides for the allocation of 100 billion euros to support Ukraine.
